FARMIN

Farmin

Grandpa Gus dun roused Buster out tha bed. Tole him that thay had ta save tha crop. It was 2 am.

Tha storm was powerful bad; it was a gully washer! Grandpa Gus an Buster got ta tha farm an had ta stop whar tha gravel ended an that ole gumbo, county road begin. Both of em walked ta tha first rice field which was a 90 on tha north end of tha farm. Thunder and lightning was a playin havoc in tha sky an it was a rainin so hard ya could barely see yore hand in front of yore face. That ole gumbo balled up on thar boots an made em twice tha size an jes wadn't no hurryin with that weight on thar feet. But thay made as good a time as thay could. Grandpa Gus tole Buster that he shor nuf had ta have his help ta save tha crop. Tha levees was a bustin out an gonna wash tha rice right on down ta Indian Bayou an then ta tha Arkansas river ifn thay didn't stop or at least slow that water down sum. Grandpa Gus had his shovel and tole Buster he knowed it was cold fer a summer nite but he was a gonna have ta lay down in tha cut till he filled er in. Buster tole his grandpa Gus ta les git er dun. Buster layed down in tha mud an water whilst his grandpa Gus fought tha water floodin tha field an tha rain a beatin down on both of em. Grandpa Gus was a hand an knowed he had ta stop tha water an with Buster breakin tha speed of tha water he jes might be able ta shovel nuf of that buckshot an gumbo mud ta fill in tha break an it hold. Grandpa Gus an Buster went all nite an up inta tha mornin fillin break after break in tha levees. Sumtimes thay had ta do it over and over agin cause tha levee kept a breakin. Finally, wore down, shiverin with tha cold an thar clothes wetter than a frog an heavy as ton of bricks; thay held tha water or opened cuts so's tha pressure was off tha levee an saved tha crop. Grandpa Gus tole Buster he dun a fine job an couldn't a saved tha crop without his help. Made Buster feel right proud he could help save tha day, I tell ya. Grandpa Gus an Buster tromped on back ta tha truck an jes sit a spell a waitin ta see what tha weather was a gonna do. That ole GMC had a heater an thay had er goin full blast a warmin up. On toward mid mornin it started ta clear an that ole bayou begin ta swell an overflowed its banks. Shor was glad grandpa dozed a overflow pit next ta tha road and put in a pump an drain pipe ta move that water out. Tha overflow was bout a 7 acre patch that was Buster's ta do with as he pleased. It had sweet hickory all over it an Buster cut it fer barbquein an firewood ta sell fer spendin money as hard cash was hard ta cum by in them days. Well, thay went on back ta tha house an cleaned up an grandma fixed up a mighty big breakfast an then thay both took a nap. Later on that evenin Buster and his grandpa Gus listened ta tha radio fer tha weather on tha farm report then headed on back ta tha farm. Thay had ta service tha relift with oil an diesel an check on tha levees an make shor water was a drainin off tha fields. After chores was dun on tha equipment Grandpa Gus an Buster walked tha bayou banks whar thay had water pumpin outa tha fields inta tha bayou. Danged ifn tha main drainage pipe wadn't stopped up! Grandpa said ta Buster that he reckoned that thay was a gonna have ta clear it. Buster knowed what had ta be dun; it was jes like he dun ta clear them beaver dams that was a always causin problems with floodin. Buster jumped on inta tha water amongst tha logjam blockin tha pipe. Buster had ta pull out all manner of limbs, logs an other debris caught up in tha jam. He had ta be right careful like cause ifn it broke free tha suction would pull him inta tha pipe an he would drown. Heck fire, thar was dead critters, snakes, fish an frogs plus a mess of other stuff he had ta contend with. Finally tween him in tha water an grandpa Gus on tha bank, thay got er cleared. Water started movin real fast an tha drain was a doin it's job. Grandpa Gus an Buster lit on out back ta tha house agin an got ready fer supper.

Grandma had fried okra, sliced tamaters, pan fried taters, Buster's favorite, corn an fried pork chops a ready an waitin fer em in no time. A good cold glass of sweet iced tea hit tha spot an thar was coconut pie, with meringue, an a German chocolate cake fer desert.

Tha next day, grandma packed thar dinner bucket fer tha two of em an grandpa Gus an Buster went back ta tha farm ta check on thangs. Grandpa Gus had him sum of them awful smellin an tastin sardines an crackers an Buster had him sum fried bologna sandwiches. Grandma always put in sum kinda desert an grandpa Gus would always give Buster his. Buster dearly loved sweets. That day Buster got him a banana, sum peanut butter patties an grandpa Gus's cake from tha one she baked last nite. After dinner, grandpa Gus tole Buster ta drive ta town whilst he walked levees an git sum parts and ask ifn Walter's pa could cum on out an weld on sum of tha equipment that needed repairs. Grandpa Gus also tole Buster ta stop by an tell Howard's pa that he needed his dump truck an backhoe out ta tha farm as soon as he could git thar too. He also said ifn he seedJessie ta tell his pa he needed ta borry a special wrench thay used fer tha gas company an only needed it fer a hour or so ifn he could spare it. Whenever he could turn it a loose would be OK with him.

Buster dun all that an got on back ta tha farm an seen ole man Eason on tha way back. Mr. Eason was a neighbor cross tha road in town an his place joined thar's ta tha southeast. Mr. Eason said he was in a pickle fer shor cause that rain took out most of his levees an he thought he probably lost his rice crop an plus his bean fields was a flooded as well. When that heat from tha hot summer sun begin ta beat down on what was left of tha crop ya had better have that water off or tha mildew an rot would git tha rest. Mr Eason didn't git out tha nite before so he purt near lost it all fer this year. Grandpa tole Buster ifn thay hadn't a went out that nite thay'd be broke fer shor. Seems like it wouldn't be that bad since thay dun what thay dun though. If thay had a break or two, thay jes might cum out ahead, specially if prices went up sum. Grandpa Gus booked sum rice an beans but was waitin on tha markets ta rise this year. He jes had a feelin bout that. Cum ta find out, he was right. Thay had a bumper crop and beans an rice went sky high thru tha roof and grandpa Gus made right smart of a profit that year.

Grandpa Gus tole Buster ta take on off an he would ride in with Mr. Eason as he wanted ta visit with him fer a spell. Said he could take tha car, '50 Chevy 6 cylinder with 3 on tha column. First off, Buster went ta see whar tha boys was an what thay was a doin. Tha rain shut down most thangs in farmin cuntry unlessen it was work in tha shop. Buster was hungry as usual an ate a bite at Jessie's. His ma had sum chicken an dressin and apple pie from dinner left over an Buster got his fill thar. Then, Buster an Jessie went on over ta Howard's an got him an then went out ta Walter's place. Danged ifn Buster didn't eat at ever one of thar houses. Now Walter had cows an stock so he had sum thangs he had ta do. All tha boys had chickens an sum farm animals but Walter's pa ranched an them cows had ta be tended. Walter's older brother dun most of the ridin an ropin an Kelvin and Walter helped too but mostly took care of tha farmin part of tha operation.

All tha boys said thay had em a week fer shor an made up ta go ta a dance Saturday nite after tha picture show at tha Parish Hall at tha Catholic church whar Walter and his people all went. Thay was a gonna feed that nite too so thay didn't want ta miss that.

Buster let out tha boys at home and thay all made up ta meet Saturday unlessen thay could git away an spend tha nite at Walter's house Friday nite. Thay'd figure that out when Friday got thar and thay talked ta thar folks. Thay all knowed thar was gonna be sum fun on tha weekend, that's fer shor cause thay'd see ta that.
